Difficult to say, Arm is a bit weird when you compare it to x64 CPU’s because it does not have comlex instructions (by design) which means that for low intensity and ‘simple’ workloads an Arm CPU will be vastly more power efficient. However the more complicated the workload gets the more x64 has an advantage due to specialized instructions.

So for most users yes Arm will start being very competetive since the #1 metric there is battery life. However for datacenter, workstation and gaming usage Arm just cannot compete and very likely never will.

As much as I currently prefer AMD processors over Intel I would hate to see them go. Without serious competition AMD will just do the exact same thing Intel did before Ryzen dropped. The problem I see now is that if Intel gets into a situation as horrible as AMD was in there are not as many revolutionary concepts out there anymore that would get them out of that hole.

As far as users on lemmy.ml are concerned ani.social does not exist (as of 10 months ago, some existing content before then can still be viewed). I think you don’t know how ActivityPub works and calling me a conspiracy theorist won’t change that.

No need for admins at all, just have the users keep the place clean entirely by themselves, I’m sure that will work wonders /s. Let’s not worry about people browsing the instance before making an account by which they could block such content. That’s such a silly idea, who’d ever want to do that. At the very beginning this was simply a discussion about the potential impacts of this “feature” threads wants to implement. The people coming in here completely naive and blind to any potential outcome to this other than “sunshine and rainbows” are you guys. I’m not saying Threads will push ads into the fediverse. I’m not even claiming they would do it in a malicious manner. I was simply refuting the claim that it could not happen. And despite your claim I am familiar enough with mastodon to know that can happen via tag relays at the very least.

For someone calling others uninformed about the fediverse I am astonished how uniformed you are about it yourself. I am by no means deeply familiar with the activitypub protocol or the fediverse despite running an instance but I know enough about it that I can say with absolute certainty that ads could and would find their way to the fediverse. Would that be somehow novel and new? No, relays are a known factor and by their very nature they do not filter out unwanted content. When an admin subscribes to a tag or instance relay they get all the content from that relay not only the stuff they want. As such ads would not be much different from a regular post made by a company. I never claimed such anyway. I only claimed if Threads made ads federate (if then most certainly with a marker that it is an ad for compliance reasons) they would end up in the global feeds unless the platform backends implement whatever mechanisms Threads would use to mark those ads in the activitypub data. I see no reason provided so far to discredit that possibilty. Learn to differentiate between hysteria and reasonable discussion before making wild accusations next time.

The example shown literally is a regular post simply marked “Sponsored” so it can be assumed that post would federate just like any other post. The only difference being the Sponsor marker likely being a Threads exclusive ActivityPub extension so unless other platforms implement that the post would show up as a regular post on e.g. Mastodon.

Them being in compliance with EU regulations while simultaneously blasting their ads into the Fediverse are not mutually exclusive. There are ways for them to do both. And to be fair here if the ads get federated they will likely be marked as such in some way so other Fediverse platforms should be able to filter the ads out easily.

Edit: after reading the article I heavily suspect ads will federate. As is they are just specially marked posts so I see no reason to think they won’t federate.

As the other commenter already said it’s an abundance of caution. GItea is already moving in the direction of SaaS and an easily self-hostable solution runs counter to that plan (Gitea is already offering a managed Cloud so this is not a hypothetical). One thing that has already happened is Gitea introducing a Contributor License Agreement, effectively allowing them to change the license of the code at any time.

Unfortunately I don’t know, I only heard about the support duration from one of our systems IT guys. Even if it isn’t more expensive (or even if it’s cheaper) companies will prefer the longer license because IT staff migrating these machines costs a lot of money (and sometimes the migration isn’t without problems which costs even more) so they try to minimize the frequeny of migrations as much as possible.

Win 10 LTS is a 10 year license, Win 11 LTS 5 years. There’s your answer.

The worst part really is just getting off the damn spam lists. There is almost no documentation anywhere for do’s and dont’s. I ultimately had to setup a sending relay for the mail on my status monitoring VPS because my residential IP triggered most spam filters, but I only found out that that was the problem from forum posts investigating the same problem. I check with stuff like mail-tester, get back perfect scores and yet most of my outgoing emails have a good chance to land in the spam folder anyway (but at least they get delivered so that’s a plus I guess)

As others in other threads have said: Google and Microsoft have killed the ability to self-host email simply by black-boxing their spam filters. As a user you have no real way to fix your mail server such that your emails get delivered into the inbox reliably.
