I have done pair programming with a junior partner, and I found it extremely beneficial. Taking the time to talk out my ideas and logic invariably helped make them clearer in my mind and realize pitfalls much sooner than I otherwise would have.

I had to explain things clearly and logically, and he was bright enough to ask good questions and point out typos as I was coding.

One of the teachers at my high school was a Catholic priest. He had been accused of molesting a young boy when he was in a parish so the bishop, in his wisdom, moved him to an all boys boarding school.

He was later found guilty of molesting the original boy and the parish, as well as a boy at my school. From what I know now, he was definitely grooming one of my classmates, so there were probably many more victims.

He was given 3 years probation, and died a year or two ago, more than 40 years since I had him as a teacher.

In Ontario, any organization that receives provincial money must reach a certain accessibility level on its website, or risk having its funding removed.

I started with a book too. But it was 1996, and the distro was Yggdrasil, and the book was a printout of all the man pages. I don’t drink coffee, but the owner of a coffee plantation on the side of a volcano in Panama told me that it was one of the best ways to make coffee. I figure he would know.

My wife, who does love coffee, doesn’t use it simply because it only makes one small cup of coffee at a time, and she likes to start the day with a big cup. She acknowledges that the taste is superior.

We don’t seem to have a problem giving the state power to take life from other countries’ citizens, though. The only way you can stop that is if the other country is more powerful than yours.

My point is not about how case is meant to be used my point is that it is very easy to make a mistake that is difficult to spot. I think it makes a lot more sense to the case insensitive, and force different names to be used.

I feel the same way about programming languages. There is no way that “User” and “user” should refer to different variables. How many times has that screwed people up, especially in a weekly typed language?

That’s right. If the debts take up all the money, then there is nothing left to inherit. And if there isn’t enough money to pay all the debts, then the debtors go away unsatisfied. In no case do the heirs have any responsibility for the debts.

I should emphasize that this is in countries governed by English common law: the UK, Canada, the US, Australia, New Zealand, etc. I have no idea if it is true in countries following the Napoleonic Code, or anywhere else.

I have the set of Infocom text adventure games. I think the earliest ones came out in about 1981 or 82. I still fire one up now and then for a nostalgia hit. I bought a few when they came out, but couldn’t afford more.

You can play some of them online, in your browser. Of course there are thousands of text adventure games (a.k.a. interactive fiction) available for free. Definitely worth checking out! And look at Inform, a language and IDE for creating these games by using more or less standard English.

To protect against piracy, most of these games required physical objects that were included in the game box. They are known as feelies. There are plenty of places on the web where you can find all the feelings you need.

I’m just about to move to Quebec, which is based on the French Napoleonic code rather than English Common Law. I’m not an expert, but I understand that the French system does not rely on precedent in making judicial decisions, but everything has to be codified in the law.

Anyway, another one of the legal differences between Quebec and other provinces in Canada is that mandatory arbitration clauses are illegal.

The medical system may be imploding even faster than the rest of Canada, and my rights as an English speaker may be stripped from me by the time I move, but they do have some protections for individuals.
