Founder of slrpnk.net, now busy with other projects :)
This is a very interesting topic that would require a lot of discussions
In my opinion, we (obviously) need both BUT the messages leveraging fear will still be more spread thanks to algorithms.
So the issue here is more like “how do we reach the people that need more positive messages” rather than “we need more positive messages”
In the end, a lot of people just can’t get out of their own hamster wheel unless hard helped offline by people close to them.
It’s also true that we don’t need masses to react, just enough people… So well, as I said, it’s food for thought that requires discussions and actions, there is no end synthesis to this comment of mine :)
It’s sad that most people are commenting without even reading the article nor watching the mockumentary. We can be better than this :)
I watched it and it has some nice jokes and sketches in it. There is no blame, just plain explaining some psychological mechanism and also even mocking the corporate greenwashing.
It does not address capitalism, yes. It pushes Patagonia, yes. Still, it’s a good little video, I would send it to people around me if it was in my language.
Yep, this move was sad.
Like when Birkenstock, notoriously worn by communists here in Europe, decided to go public lol
why folks shouldn’t bother trying to emit less carbon?
I’m not saying they shouldn’t, just talking about priorities :)
I’m also playing the “being less dependent on capitalism” game but I recognize that it’s an uphill battle and most of the people don’t have time nor energy like me.
On an individual level I’d say the most important thing is taking back our time and cognitive energy to unlock other possibilities.
If you have time and energy yes, lower your footprint, help people around you do the same, get healthier, get powerful, be more resilient and so on. If you are a normal person with limited time and energy focus on wellbeing and even just putting one inch of support on the stuff I said earlier because the number of people at rallies and strikes really matters.
Your part is not thinking how to reduce your carbon footprint but organizing with other people and partecipating in collective actions or movements or whatever.
Your small part may be even just donating 10€ to the people needing legal help cause protesting. Or just showing up to a rally. Joining a union…
I think that just liberals think we should all try to reduce our carbon footprint so there is really no need to feel guilty about that on this server ;)
Sweden is so ahead :)
You could do an AMA about this stuff (probably the best suited community is !urbanism@slrpnk.net ), it’s really interesting to know how it was setup and all the costs and idk how you take common decision and who owns the building and so on
environmentalists are still blaming me and the plastic straw I used last week
Do they really? Are these people here in this room? I know literally 0 environmentalist that would blame you for the plastic straw.
You don’t have to change your system, you must change your surroundings :)
If the system will come along, better. If not, you still kinda improved the life for those around you
This is a false dichotomy. Also, in the case you haven’t noticed, this sub is part of a solarpunk server. We want solarpunk :)
I think you are getting downvoted by a mix of people who think about it being a bit ableist policy (even tho you did include that for people who need it they should be able to take it) but also just because it’s full of US people. They are just 4% of the world population yet they act like we should talk about solutions taking them into account everytime. It’s one of the reasons that made me give ownership of slrpnk to another person, I feel like it’s a bit pointless to talk about organizing while the userbase is so spread and often so US focussed, they are basically behind in every policy.
Just move on, don’t worry my friend
Read some books about how to do politics strategically and you’ll see why they do this
Your anger works in their favor
Trump is not in charge and so it’s more about US elections rather than climate policy
I don’t think that if we start posting every bullshit said by every politician around the world the sub would still be useful
