It’s really embarrassing to speak to someone who’s almost certainly being paid a shit wage because you’re mad at someone like 15 steps up the corporate ladder. This is the equivalent of going to a McDonald’s drive through and trying to hold the cashier personally responsible for their pricing. A bot that just spams the media ratings of some random dude is so incredibly a techbro non-solution to the actual problem of people posting questionable sources. Not only does it not stop people from posting questionable sources to begin with, it creates a bunch of off topic chatter about the rating itself. So now instead of just removing poor sources, poor sources get a comment that probably 90% of people voting aren’t going to see. This is somehow progress, despite changing nothing.
It adds no value to the posts, incites arguments (how is that helping with modding? Why do the mods need to announce MBFC’s rating on every post?), and exports critical thinking to a site that has its own biases while maintaining a veneer of “neutrality”. The ratings often have no justification, making them little better than some dude’s opinion. I can keep going but I think that covers most of it.

A way to improve the MBFC bot would be to delete it.
Failing that, a way to improve the community would be to ban it.
It absolutely is not a joke. It’s normal for regular name changes to require publishing a notice in the paper as well, the idea being that it’s a way to keep people honest (or at least findable) if someone is changing their name to duck out on their debts. There are exceptions for publishing notices if you’re changing your name due to domestic violence and stuff like that too.
But as is immediately obvious to anyone with a couple of brain cells to rub together, it can be INCREDIBLY DANGEROUS to a trans person to announce in the paper that they’re having a big trans name change!
God, I wish it was that easy when I changed my name and gender… and that was in California! My understanding is CA doesn’t require this anymore, but after I got my court order I had to get my doctor to fill out this form certifying me as a Real Transgender before the DMV would update shit. And this wasn’t in the 90s or anything, it was less than a decade ago. I consider myself lucky that the requirement to publish an ad in the paper announcing your name change was removed before I got mine done.
It blows my mind that “Biden just had a raspy voice!!” isn’t banned as misinformation here. Because it literally is, there is no reasonable way to interpret “we beat Medicare” being yelled over and over as the result of a raspy voice. Absolute memory hole shit.
