I keep seeing people say something along the lines that Rockstar doesn’t have any reason to shut out Linux and therefore it must be due to development costs or something. Developers have come out in the past saying that it doesn’t make sense to officially support Linux because the market share doesn’t justify the extra development/debugging costs, and so assuming that must be what’s going on here instead. However, both BattlEye and Valve have released official statements that are contrary to this narrative.

Statement from official BattlEye twitter stating that they natively support Linux, but developers have to opt in.

Official statement from Steam saying much the same and specifically mentioning there’s barely any work required from developers.

What we can conclude from these posts is that Valve/Proton and BattlEye are handling all the heavy lifting when it comes to enabling compatibility with Linux, so no, this has nothing to do with development costs.

Why do companies using BattlEye refuse to enable Linux compatibility then? Well they’ll never give us an honest answer and just put out purposefully misleading PR at best, as we’ve seen with Rockstar, so we can only speculate as to their true motivations. What we know though is that Linux gaming’s progress with Proton and Wine is seriously threatening Microsoft’s monopoly in the PC gaming space, and that this probably makes some very rich assholes very uncomfortable.
