The title assumes we know this Dirk guy, but might not have heard of Linus…
I was curious, in case anybody else doesn’t know who Dirk Hohndel is:
- Currently works as Head of the Open Source Program Office at Verizon
- Formerly VMware’s Chief Open Source Officer
- Formerly spent almost 15 years as Intel’s Chief Linux and Open Source Technologist
- Formerly Chief Technology Officer of SuSE and Unix Architect of Deutsche Bank
- Developer and contributor in Linux and open source since the early 1990s. He was one of the early Linux kernel developers and has contributed to several dozen open source projects over the years.
Linus plays the piano in Charlie Brown, right?
Nah. He’s that Youtube dude.
I can see how one might interpret it that way, but it could also be that Linus is important and deserves introduction, where this other Dirk guy just serves as facilitator and so doesn’t warrant introduction.

Verizon does Open Source?
basically every big tech company does at least a little
Dirk is the current maintainer of the open source dive log software “Subsurface”. He took over from Linus.
They dive(ed?) frequently together, and are good friends.
Is it a keynote or a conversation?
Did listen to the first minute? Linus explains why it has the format.
Dick Handler?
