… reading this I assume Jerry was the universally loved character I was suppressed to root for? At best I thought it was just a fun stalemate between two fairly diffident characters cohabiting the same area.

But I’ve basically always liked Tom more, even as a smol kid not actually knowing their names (which is which). But then again, there is quite a bit of lore & episodes differ a lot (different series even more so).

And as a grownup I def think Jerry was just a sadistic dick in most cases, whereas Tom showed compassion more often.

I always thought Jerry was a pos. Tom didn’t want to catch him. He just wanted to vibe, but he was ordered to. Jerry is a knobhead.

I mean, most of the classic cartoons have it as very give-and-take. Tom is more often the loser, because a mouse is the underdog and a mouse winning is generally funnier, but it’s not usually assigned a moral component.

As one of my brother’s friends remarked, some forty odd years ago:

Sylvester’s cool. That fuckin’ bird ain’t.

They said Batman was crazy for microwaving enormous marshmallows and eating them without any graham crackers or chocolate, or anything. Then again, they said he was crazy for being a pseudo-ninja vigilante, too.
